So what is the cycling like? Well, in a couple words, very hilly. This is a mountainous area and apart from the roads near the coast there are few flat roads. There are two roads into Abunuelas and both have steep climbs - from the East there is a climb of 3km averaging 10% with sections of 20%, and two smaller climbs when approaching from the North.
To the east of the Lecrin Valley lies the area of the Alpujarras with climbs up to several pretty villages including Pampaneira, Capileira and Bubion. Futher along the valley lies the village of Trevelez, at a height of 1486 metres the town is the highest recognised municipality in Spain.
To the North lies Granada and routes up to the ski resort of Sierra Nevada at 2200m.
In addition to cycling on road there is ample opportunity to venture off-road into the hills. The hills are a mixture of pine forests and cultivated land (olives, almonds, citrus fruits) and there is a huge network of tracks which allow the farmers to reach their land. In the immediate vicinity of Albunuelas it is possible to cycle to the peaks of Herrero at 1503m and Giralda at 1430m (Both higher than Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak).There are fantastic views here - the coast (30km away) can be seen on a clear day from Herrero and also from numerous other places in the hills.
